10th Senate District Call Issued

This link is the PDF of the Official Call

By just 360 votes, John McGuire won the 5th Congressional District race. This came after he repeatedly said he wouldn’t run and with about 3,000 democrat voters crossing over in the primary.
(A wee bit more on that later.)

The result? McGuire is (eventually) vacating his Virginia Senate seat to head to Congress.

So, what happens to his Senate seat?
The vacated seat creates the situation of an open seat that must be filled with a special election.

How do you nominate a candidate for a special election?
The 10th Senate Legislative District Committee decides the process, location, and timing.

This committee is made up of GOP chairmen from each county in the 10th Senate District. They select a chairman and meet to handle district matters when needed. A special election is one of those matters, and they’ve already met and made these decisions:

  • How? A Mass Meeting.
  • Where? The Goochland Sports Complex.
  • When? Friday, December 13th.

Here’s the official Mass Meeting Call. Please read it and make plans to attend.

What is a Mass Meeting?

A mass meeting is a public gathering organized by a political party. Voters in the area come together to choose a candidate for an election or make other decisions for the party. Anyone who agrees with the party’s principles and is eligible to vote in the district can attend and participate.

Mass meetings are a method some political parties in Virginia use to select their candidates. While recent legislation restricts mass meetings for regular elections starting January 1, 2024, these rules don’t apply to special elections, like this one.

For this special election, the Republican 10th Senate District Legislative Committee has called for a mass meeting to nominate a candidate. This method is entirely legal and allowed under Virginia law. Voters participating in the meeting must affirm their support for Republican principles and pledge to support the party’s nominee.

One of these candidates will face a Democrat in the special election to fill the soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat.

Before the Special Election Happens

Two things need to happen first:

  1. John McGuire must resign his Virginia Senate seat (he hasn’t yet).
  2. Louise Lucas, President of the Virginia Senate, must call for the special election. Normally, this is the Governor’s job, but because the Senate is in a “special session,” this duty falls to Lucas.

Why This Election Matters

Virginia’s political climate is shifting. Keeping the 10th Senate District red and in the hands of a strong, conservative leader is essential. We need someone who can think quickly, speak effectively, effectively message, and represent our conservative and Trumpian values in Richmond.

About Those Democrat Voters in the GOP Primary

Think of this:

  • If Democrats who crossed over in the Republican 2023 primary were Trump converts, they voted for his endorsed candidate.
  • If they were loyal Democrats, they likely voted for who they saw as the the weaker Republican to give their side an advantage in the general election – and the Chairman of the Freedom Caucus would be a highly expected target for dem defeat efforts.
